Ms. L Finds Social Connection with Seabury

Ms. L lost her vision years ago in a terrible accident. Now an older adult with vision impairment, she attends Seabury’s Center for the Blind & Visually Impaired four days a week. The Center supports older adults from across Washington, DC as they age with vision impairment. Services at the Center are free to all DC residents and include independent living skills training, music therapy, nutritional meals, Braille instruction, and other communication skills. At the Center, Ms. L enjoys listening to audiobooks, allowing her to continue one of her favorite hobbies. Ms. L is also learning to use a computer at the Center through a Braille keyboard and voice assistance. Regular volunteers also come to the Center to teach classes, serve meals, and build relationships with older adult clients.

Ms. L also relies on Seabury’s Age-In-Place® program to help her clean her home, which she is no longer able to do on her own. Age-In-Place® supports older adults in Washington’s Wards 4, 5, and 6 through volunteer yard work and house cleaning projects. Ms. L appreciates the house cleaning services she receives and the ability to age safely in her home. She says the best part of the program is the time spent with Age-In-Place® volunteers. She experiences a great deal of social isolation as a older adult with vision impairment, so she loves talking to the young people who are committed to helping her remain in her home. Below, Seabury Age-In-Place® volunteers from the university of Maryland work in an older adults yard.

You can make a difference in the life of a local older adult like Ms. L. Learn how you can volunteer with Seabury Age-In-Place®, email ageinplace@seaburyresources.org or call 202-625-9384 ext. 102.
