A Global Day of Giving

The holidays are a time to share with family and friends, but this time has also become a major shopping weekend. Between Black Friday, Small Business Saturday, and Cyber Monday, there were plenty of opportunities to spend. Giving Tuesday, November 27, is a global day of giving that brings the focus of the holidays back to sharing. Started in 2012, Giving Tuesday is a movement that connects individuals and organizations to recognize the power of giving. Donations from individuals like you have a huge impact on the lives of the older adults we serve, like Joan.

Joan used to be very active- practicing yoga, traveling on cruises, and participating as a member of a dance group. She enjoyed her life. Joan’s life was turned around when she was diagnosed with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). She could no longer do the things she loved and became depressed. She found it hard to even walk ten steps without losing her breath. She needed something to engage in again and heard about Seabury’s Model Cities Senior Wellness Center from a friend. At Model Cities, Seabury offers exercise and fitness classes, recreational activities and trips, and resources and information so that older adults stay healthy and engaged. Now, Joan visits the Center regularly and puts in over 100 hours each month at the gym. She no longer needs her medication or supplemental oxygen, and she’s back to her happy self. She feels more active now than when she was younger! In her own words, “I’m just grateful and thankful that I had a second opportunity to get this thing right”.

This year, we are trying to raise $1,000 in a single day to support Joan and other older adults who have had a health setback and might otherwise be disconnected. Share the gift of a second chance this Thanksgiving, and donate to Seabury on November 27th through our website or on Facebook.

Facebook is matching up to $7 million in donations made through the site this Giving Tuesday and it’s easy to create your Facebook fundraiser and spread the holiday spirit with a few clicks of a button. Through a generous grant made by The Morris and Gwendolyn Cafritz Foundation your contribution will be matched - double your impact and make your gift today.
