The holiday season is upon us! For many, the holidays mean over-eating. Fear not! You can eat well this winter without over-indulging, with the following helpful tips from Juliet Gyimah-Akesson, Nutritionist in Seabury's Ward 6 office.
1. Don’t arrive on an empty stomach
It is very tempting to skip meals before a holiday event in order to splurge, don’t! Have a light snack, such as fresh fruit, salad, and a handful of nuts or a small sandwich.
2. Offer to bring a healthy dish
This plan provides you with a good menu option and your host would appreciate it.
3. Avoid excess alcohol and snacks
Save your calories for the main meal. Alcohol provides many calories and almost no nutrients.
4. Select small portions
Moderation is the key. Selecting small portions allows you to control your calorie intake and still enjoy all the different offerings.
5. Eat slowly
Take your time and enjoy the taste of the meal. It usually takes about 20 minutes for your brain to get the message that your stomach is full. By eating slowly, you might be less likely to raid the dessert table.
6. Leave the table when you are done
If you linger at the table, you may be tempted to continue eating even if you are not hungry. Offer to help with dishes, clear table or take a walk.
