Good Food, Good Community, Good Resources

Interconnected Challenges

Families in the DC region are dealing with a host of interconnected challenges: the cost of living is up, with groceries 29% more expensive in 2025 than they were in 2020 (USDA) – as a consequence, more than 1 in 10 DC older adults are dealing with food insecurity (Food Research and Action Center). Older adults are aging alone (DACL) and facing increased isolation, and with a growing older adult community, there is a scarcity of services and an increased need for professionals to help navigate a complicated landscape of resources (Congressional Budget Office).

Seabury Resources for Aging® addresses these interconnected challenges with a comprehensive approach that threads our Four Pillars – Good Housing, Good Food, Good Community, and Good Resources – through all that we do. Below is a list of our programs that address food insecurity, social isolation, and access to resources for seniors in the District of Columbia and the surrounding region.

Ward 5 & 6 Lead Agency*

Seabury serves over 100,000 no cost meals from Fort Totten to Southwest Waterfront in DC as the Lead Agency for Wards 5 & 6.

As the District’s Lead Agency partner, Seabury offers eleven community dining sites in Wards 5 & 6, providing not just free meals but also social activities, health & wellness presentations, financial education, and referrals to case managers for community members in need of additional support.

42% of seniors in DC have experienced hunger in the last 12 months, and over half of the people Seabury serves live alone. Our Lead Agency work is at the forefront of addressing senior hunger in DC and helping members stay socially engaged.

“Seabury has picked me up; I wouldn’t be coming out of bed. I’m speaking completely honestly, [the lunch program] has helped me with my depression. I have something to get up for now, my hygiene is up.” – Ms. B

Congregational Resources

Seabury is a resource for congregations serving an increasingly older community. Our staff work with clergy to help them understand the resources available to them, provide educational presentations, and train faith leaders on the spiritually of aging with our nationally recognized curriculum The Path Ahead: Spirituality & Purpose in Later Life℠.

Congregational Resources is also proud to host our annual Celebration of Service, a yearly tradition offering local faith communities the opportunity to recognize the older adults who provide important, and often unsung, contributions to their community.

For the first time there are more people over the age of 60 than under the age of 10. With the cost of housing growing, and demand for senior affordable housing outpacing demand, it’s imperative that we support older homeowners to age where they feel most comfortable and have the strongest support system.

Seabury’s Age-in-Place® program supports homeowners in DC Wards 4, 5, and 6 to age in place with volunteer yard work and light housekeeping. Not only do the volunteers provide a valuable service, but also offer important socialization for homeowners who live alone and may have limited connections in their community.

Out & About*

“Aging with pride is a right, not a privilege.”

Out & About is Seabury’s social programming for LGBTQ+ older adults. Over virtual movie nights, planned outings in downtown DC, and small/large group gatherings, Seabury supports the older queer community to maintain and build connections, and keeps the community up to date with health education, resources, and wellness programs that focus on the specific wants and needs of this community.

Seabury is proud to serve the generation of Stonewall, who have lived through a sea change in the way they are able to embrace their sexuality. For many older LGBTQ+, identity and sexuality is still a sensitive subject. Many “go back in the closet” when they enter a senior living community out of fear of being ostracized. It can be very socially isolating.

Out & About provides a fun, safe, space for people to be who they are, and welcomes everyone to join us “out and about!”
